When it comes to burning calories intensively, very few forms of Yoga would probably qualify at the same level as, say, a Spinning class or a boot camp session.

You can burn up to 400 calories per hour in a bodily-demanding Yoga class, which moves quickly and can include hand weights. But the most typical class contains between 175 and 250 calories per hour. On the other hand, it is estimated that Zumba burns about 650 calories per hour.

Of course, calorie expenditure is highly dependent on individual factors such as age, muscle mass, body weight, basal metabolic rate, general daily activity and even gender — men tend to burn more calories than women.

This means that you could burn 300 calories in a Yoga class, while your friend will only burn half of them. But even taking these caveats into account, Yoga can still be effective as part of a weight loss effort, since it has many benefits that can indirectly contribute to weight loss, even if you don’t turn on a calorie oven during classes. Here’s why Yoga should be in your Weight loss Routine:

STRENGTH-BUILDING PUSH

Many Yoga classes involve at least some form of strength building through bodyweight exercises.

For example, you can do a sequence called “Chaturanga”, which is basically a half-pump that strengthens your triceps, shoulder muscles and pectorals. Other poses could train your core, quadriceps, hamstrings and glutes.

When you work against gravity, these Yoga sequences turn into resistance training. And this strengthens muscle mass-which, in turn, leads to long-term calorie burning.

LESS STRESS AND BETTER SLEEP

When it comes to a belly fat builder, Stress is very effective in packing the pounds. That’s because chronic stress keeps your cortisol levels high and your body responds to it by breaking down feel-good brain chemicals like serotonin, according to Sara Gottfried, M.D., author of “The Hormone Cure.”

Not only does this combination cause you to start storing more abdominal fat — which the body stores to have an available source of energy in a fight-or-flight situation – but it also has a negative impact on your sleep and increases your sugar craving, which makes things worse.

Once a chronic cortisol level is eliminated, no amount of exercise or calorie restriction will affect someone’s weight, says Eliza Kingsford, psychotherapist and author of “brain-powered weight loss.””Imagine eating right, exercising and doing everything you can to stay healthy, only to find that you are gaining weight. This, in turn, leads to feelings of stress and the cycle continues. This is what causes Stress.”

Yoga is a powerful stress reliever, and one study found that it works throughout the body to create a more relaxed state. When this happens, the other healthy habits that you adopt to lose weight simply work better.

MORE SOCIAL TIME

Streaming a Yoga class online is great for busy schedules, but it’s also worth considering taking an in-person class. It can give you the opportunity to connect with others, even if you don’t have a deep discussion with anyone.

A study has revealed that Yoga is a useful tool for weight loss, especially due to the non-competitive social support of the Yoga community. Many of the participants in this study felt different and more positive in a Yoga studio than in the culture they had experienced in gyms and health clubs.

The study participants also expressed the feeling that the other students and the Yoga teacher were role models of healthy eating, but also of a healthier worldview, useful for reducing stress and adopting better behaviors.

HEALTHIER EATING HABITS

If you incorporate a practice like Yoga into your Routine and feel less Stress and better sleep, you will probably pay more attention to what you eat, Kingsford believes.

This is supported by a recent study that suggests that people who feel overworked and exhausted are at a much higher risk of emotional eating and overeating. The researchers also found that the higher the fatigue and overwork, the more people tend to look for fast food and convenient options, which leads to a higher calorie intake.

Yoga’s emphasis on mindfulness and presence is not only helpful when transitioning into your next Pose — it also encourages a mindset that comes in handy when you’re in the aisle of a grocery store or looking at a menu.

“Developing greater self-awareness in general can help you understand why you are making the choices you are making when it comes to food and activity,” says Kingsford. “You can start to see patterns that don’t serve you and work to change them.”

FOCUS ON SELF-CARE

As everyone who is trying to lose weight knows, losing weight requires more than a calorie-in-calorie-out approach.

Although this is an effective starting point for many, saving on self-care can make weight loss efforts more difficult or, worse, completely ineffective. Putting everyone first can lead to putting a healthy diet and exercise on the to-do list, which contributes to sabotaging weight loss.

Adding Yoga to a Routine may not be a calorie burner, but it can still achieve good results by helping you establish good habits that result in constant and lasting weight loss that lasts.
