Some people have their best ideas in the shower. Others come to important conclusions during a walk. Wherever your lightbulb moments occur, research shows that exercise promotes creativity. Thus, people who exercise can be more creative than those who are not.

Previous studies have shown a link between exercise and short-term bursts of creativity. A 2014 study from Stanford University analyzed the creative thinking of 176 participants and found that people consistently provided more inspired responses to Tests used to measure creative thinking while walking than to sedentary work. The effect of walking also spread immediately after the end of the workout. While the participants did not score as high when sitting as when moving, those who sat down for a second Test After walking felt a residual effect and scored better on the tests than those who did not walk at all.

The researchers also found that walking stimulates creativity, whether it occurs indoors or outdoors. This is a good sign for people who like to walk to meetings or take an occasional trip to the office. “Integrating body activity into our lives is beneficial not only for our heart, but also for our brain,” explains Marily Prezzo, PhD. “This research suggests a simple and productive way to engage in specific work activities.”

Building on this previous research, a study from the University of Graz in Austria tried to determine the link between regular body activity and one’s own creative performance, rather than feeling short-term effects immediately after exercise. The scientists gave 79 participants activity trackers and monitored their movements for five days. This method made it possible to measure all activities, including walking, vigorous exercise and spontaneous movements that occurred throughout the week, not just forced activity that occurs in the laboratory.

After these five days, the researchers measured the creativity of each participant with Tests ranging from verbal associations to drawing exercises. The most active people turned out to be the most creative and showed a correlation between general body activity and creative cognition.

We know that exercise boosts mood, but this study aimed to determine if increased creativity was simply linked to happiness. It turns out that this is not the matter. Research has shown that exercise is independently associated with creativity. Even if your training has not made you happier, you can still benefit from an increase in brain power.

The next time you’re stuck with an idea or need Inspiration, try taking a walk, getting on your bike (even stationary), or lifting weights. The benefits are twofold: your heart, muscles and bones appreciate the exercise, and your brain appreciates the increased creativity. If you can’t leave the office but need to solve a problem, take a walk around the building or do exercises in the office.
